"The time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining."
Happy fall!
As we know from President John F. Kennedy's inaugural address, "[t]he time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining." We've done just that here at Flower Hill! In addition to completing our historic roof replacement project, my first months as Director have been busy meeting numerous Austin community leaders and sharpening the organization's priorities. The museum field now has a new museum definition that we'll be using to chart the future course of Flower Hill. We're also asking for your feedback in envisioning what this future may look like. We hope to see you on Sunday for Austin Museum Day and at additional programs slated for this fall. Read below for more information!
Sincerely,
Daniel Ronan, Executive Director
Flower Hill Completes Historic Roof Replacement
On Monday, supporters of Flower Hill's roofing project came to the grounds to celebrate the completion of its historic roof replacement. Come see it for yourself every weekday from 9am to 1pm during Flower Hill's open hours! Or this Sunday for Austin Museum Day!
Flower Hill Participates in 25th Annual Austin Museum Day this Sunday, September 18th
The 25th annual Austin Museum Day is a chance to connect with new Flower Hill Executive Director Daniel Ronan over coffee and croissants! Come for self-guided tours of Flower Hill's grounds. Due to construction, the house is currently closed for the rest of 2022 with potential future closures also probable. Austin Museum Day is an opportunity to visit museums across Austin for free as well as bring friends and family supporters to value museum institutions.
What is a "Museum"? The World now has a New Museum Definition
On August 25, the International Council of Museums adopted the new museum definition in Prague, Czech Republic, conducting a three-year public engagement process since the organization's last triennial conference in Kyoto, Japan. The definition will be used to assist Flower Hill in examining its future role as a museum in Austin. Learn more about the definition HERE.
“A museum is a not-for-profit, permanent institution in the service of society that researches, collects, conserves, interprets and exhibits tangible and intangible heritage. Open to the public, accessible and inclusive, museums foster diversity and sustainability. They operate and communicate ethically, professionally and with the participation of communities, offering varied experiences for education, enjoyment, reflection and knowledge sharing.” - Adopted by the 26th ICOM General Conference held in Prague, the ICOM Extraordinary General Assembly
Executive Director Daniel Ronan at the ICOM Prague conference where the museum definition was approved by over 480 representatives from over 130 countries around the world.
