Garage Project
In the fall of 2024, the Flower Hill Center will transform our historic 1920s garage into a versatile multi-use space. Collaborating with architects from Lord Aeck Sargent, we'll restore the original brick walls, install a new roof, level the concrete floor, and incorporate dynamic glass folding doors, creating a vibrant, climate-controlled environment. In the second phase, we'll enhance the surrounding grounds with landscaping and accessible pathways, turning the upper area into a welcoming venue for events, education, and community gatherings.
Collections Management
Thanks to a generous donation from a local philanthropist, Flower Hill is thrilled to advance our efforts in cataloging, researching, and caring for our extensive collections. With over 60,000 items, we house centuries-old furniture, textiles, rare books, art, global trinkets, and treasures from Austin's early days. This project directly supports our mission to preserve and promote Austin's rich history, enhancing the museum’s readiness for full-time exhibitions and ensuring the long-term preservation of our historical materials.

Grounds and Gardens
As we continue to develop the grounds at Flower Hill, we are focused on restoring the decorative ironwork railings, gates, and historic rose arbor, enhancing the beauty and heritage of our site.

In 2024, we proudly welcomed our first Gardener-in-Residence, Michelle Jantsch. With her expertise, we are not only rebuilding but also expanding the food sustainability practices that the Smoot family enjoyed for three generations, fostering a vibrant, eco-friendly environment for our community. Together, we’re cultivating a space that honors our history while looking toward a sustainable future.
Foundation Repairs
The next major step in restoring the historic Smoot family home is stabilizing the floors and foundation. As we approach the 150th anniversary of the home’s construction, we are preparing for our most ambitious project yet. By winter 2025, we aim to begin construction in collaboration with a team of experts to secure the structure. Stabilizing the house is crucial not only for its integrity but also for its role in housing our extensive collection.
